The Farms

Stoneledge Farm - Stoneledge Farm, our primary provider and main reason for being, is an organic farm located approximately 120 miles north of New York City in the Northern Catskill region. There, Deborah and Pete Kavakos and their four children grow over 45 different vegetables and herbs. The weather and climate hold some restrictions, but old favorites and new varieties are planted in abundance for CSA members and delivered in season to the CSA sites. The greenhouse and fields of Stoneledge Farm are certified organic by the Northeast Organic Farming Association of New York (NOFA-NY). To keep members connected to the farm, Debbie writes a note for the weekly newsletter.

Hot Bread Kitchen - Hot Bread Kitchen is a not-for-profit bakery and workforce development program run by Jessamyn Waldman for immigrant women offering fresh, organic bread baked in the city .

CSA Pastured Meat and Poultry - Organized by Nancy Brown, the CSA Pastured Meat and Poultry group is an aggregation of farms and producers in the area of Washington and Saratoga counties. Products range from pasture raised beef, pork, lamb, chicken and eggs to cheeses, fish, jams and more. The following farms are just some of the participants.

Lewis Waite Farm - Lewis Waite Farm is owned and operated by Nancy and Alan Brown who raise cattle and pigs in Greenwich, NY. They also grow vegetables, flowers, and sell timber for firewood.

Laughing Duck Farm - Laughing Duck Farm is owned and operated by Don McCormick in Westport, NY. Laughing Duck practices aquaponics, a self contained system where feed and heat are given to the fish water which then flows through natural filtration resulting in nutrient-rich water. This water then flows through the plant roots providing complete nutrition for the thousands of root hairs which in turn act as tremendous filtering surfaces, returning crystal-clear water to the fish. CHYCSA members can order farmed tilapia.

Consider Bardwell Farm - Straddling the rolling hills of Vermont’s Champlain Valley and easternmost Washington County, New York, 300-acre Consider Bardwell Farm was the first cheese making co-op in Vermont, founded in 1864. A century later, Russell Glover and Angela Miller, with cheesemaker Peter Dixon, are revitalizing the tradition with goats’ milk from their herd of Oberhasli Goats. Rotational grazing on pesticide-free and fertilizer-free pastures produces the sweetest milk and the tastiest cheese.

Tir na nOg - Dan and Helen Flaherty raise poultry, pigs and lamb on their grass-based farm, Tir na nOg. The Flaherty's are commited to a high level of quality which they maintain by keeping production relatively small. As a result of their excellence and cutomer loyalty, Tir na nOg has enough local business so that they no longer need to make the long trip into New York City and, as of the 2004 season, are no longer one of our regular providers. They are happy to see and sell to any members that find themselves in the Walton, NY area.
